Do As Your Mother Says

Posted by Leona Bergstrom

There were many values most mothers try to instill in their children. Among them, the importance of keeping a promise, doing what you said you would do, being responsible.

The other one is picking up after yourself.

Somewhere along the line, a few people in this world missed learning these basic principles. For the second time in the short years we’ve been “landlords,” we’ve had renters leave our home with unpaid bills and a garage full of garbage.

Not keeping the promise inherent in a lease means we incur financial obligations. Deciding that it is easier to let the owners haul off truckloads of debris rather than clean up after one’s self means we load it up, and take it to Goodwill or the dump. Slacking off on one’s responsibility and obligations always imposes on others. Sometimes it inflicts pain. In this case, it’s a little of both. Plus, a little disgust, and a whole lot of distrust.

It’s disheartening when people let you down.

So, mothers – teach your children well. Someday they’ll grow up to have responsibilities. Big ones, like keeping your promises and picking up after your self.
