A Long Time to be Married

Posted by Terry McNichols

This week my husband and I will be celebrating our 40th anniversary, March 24, 1970.  It seems like just a short time ago in some ways, and a very long time ago in others.  We are not the young college students, looking forward to medical school, new babies, moves, travel, but we have many happy memories (and just a few not-so-happy memories) of our lives together.  This quote from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow says it well:
Which is more fair,
The star of the morning or the evening star?
The sunrise or the sunset of the heart?
The hour when we look forth to the unknown,
And the advancing day consumes the shadows,
Or that when all the landscape of our lives
Lies stretched behind us, and familiar places
Gleam in the distance, and sweet memories
Rise like a tender haze, and magnify
The objects we behold, that soon must vanish?
We are content.  We love each other.  We have learned to accept those parts of each other that were once annoyances.  We can count on the GPS to keep us from arguing while traveling :-)  Our kids and grandkids bring us joy.  We trust God for the future.  We plan to stay married until "death us do part," and hope for many more memories -- and the continued ability to look forward to the sunset and back on the many happy memories!
